At KidsCo Jr., we believe that preschool aged children learn through purposeful play with an emergent curriculum, a generous supply of varied, child-centered experiences, and positive interaction with other children and healthy, responsible adults. We allow children to be children by providing a safe and healthy environment for each child to openly explore and increase their curiosity. Our active learning program offers choices and encourages children to think outside the box and to consider alternate strategies for success. Family-like environments offer young children an atmosphere of comfort, love, and freedom to explore their world so, our classroom environment is set-up to be as comfortable and ‘homey’ as possible. This snug space will be augmented with Center Rotation options which cultivate individual choice and social interaction. Centers will vary with the season and the emergent theme but will incorporate music, reading, computers, construction, dramatic play, nature, family, science,
manipulatives, writing, art, and sensory exploration. A 1:10 or better staff to child ratio will always be upheld.

Our preschoolers are given a forum to make personal choices and to find success everyday! We plan our schedule with a blend of individual and group activities and those experiences that are teacher directed and those that are child directed. Our curriculum is based on Learning Centers and Group Activities.
Our schedule is flexible, allowing opportunity for uninterrupted play and an environment conducive to emergent themes and discussions. Additionally, this flexibility permits these kids a ‘learning curve’ on preparing for transitions and practicing Life Learning.
We will continue to create a scaffold for success in learning everyday life skills with our preschoolers. Mastering self dressing, exhibiting grace and manners, tying laces, washing hands, meal etiquette, and social cooperation are some of the talents we will incorporate throughout our entire day!

Learning Centers are always available within the room and allow preschoolers to have positive decision making processes and to create a routine.

Manipulatives
are table-sized toys that include a wide variety of smaller assembly sets, pattern pieces, as well as objects that can be sorted and counted. These, along with puzzles and small toys, help to develop fine motor skills, dexterity and concentration.
Imagination station time is full of a wide variety of science based exploration, such as cooking, mixing and making concoctions, and natural sensory play, including water, soil, sand, and dirt.
Using objects as tools and materials to build and discover how things work will be the focus of this space. Inquiring minds will be intrigued with the possibilities of using safety procedures, authentic tools, and rugged materials to experiment with! Not only do they learn the mechanics of building, teaching appropriate techniques and then trusting children to be responsible is adds a platform to increasing their self esteem and a positive self image!

This area will be brimming with assorted supplies to enhance a natural love of words and writing! Paper of all sizes will be accompanied by drawing tools, ink, templates, envelopes, stickers, sticky notes, workbooks, colored pens, and posted letters. Children will increase their letter knowledge and begin reading readiness by exploring the fun of writing!
Each of our young artists will be invited to this place to dream up their next masterpiece. Resources will include glue, sequins, paper plates, cotton balls, markers, scissors, crayons, fabric scraps, watercolors, pipe cleaners,
googly
eyes and more! Each final product will be created from an individual, child driven process.
Children of this age are drawn to nature! Our nook will be devoted to bringing seasonal items indoors to study and observe. Tree bark, snake skins, bird nests, stones, flower petals, shells, insects, fur, naturally occurring colors and patterns will all be found here. We will ask open ended questions about our surrounding world and create a habitat for hands on learning!
It’s never too early be interested in reading! A comfy carpet and cushions will allow kids to relax and enjoy story time, puppets, sing-
alongs
, and rhyme time will assist with sound, shape, letter, and color recognition.

At the heart of a young child’s world is their imagination! In this space, materials will be available to grab the attention of an avid imaginer and broaden their ability to conceive the unknown. This area will not be static; it will change and grow with their interests. We will explore a zoo, kitchen, car, restaurant, stage, dentist office, pet store, market and more!
Songs, lyrics, poems, rhythms, beats, patterns, and sounds will be our focus! Children will explore homemade instruments as well as CD players, beat sticks, bells, tape recorders, and microphones to learn how music is made! Many connections to learning concepts will be linked to music and song.
Stations with several computer units outfitted with interesting, age appropriate software will be another option for our preschoolers!

Group Activities are those in which the entire class participates. These encourage guided play and cooperative learning.
During circle time, children are encouraged to join, listen, and participate. Our circle time gives children an opportunity to share what is on their minds, and promotes positive social interactions. Circle time fun includes: songs, chants, poetry, puppet shows, storytelling, games, drama, music, show & tell, & talking time.
Gaining strength, coordination, and confidence are the focus of this time. Rolling, jumping, following movements, music dancing, following beats, trampoline time, as well as interactive group games will be enjoyed.
D.E.A.R. time stands for Drop Everything and Read time. Children will be invited to join the teacher or a guest reader in listening to a book or story and participating in a discussion.
Craftastic
is a time for children to explore process art using unstructured materials that are used to create masterpieces. No two projects will have the same outcome. Children are allowed to freely express their own individual creativity.
During outdoor play, we allow children to take safe risks and experience nature in its natural state. A sand box will satisfy their sensory needs as well as promote group interactions and drama through make-believe play. We will bring the inside out by providing paint and paper for outdoor art. We will also have a shelter for dramatic play and climbers that are developmentally appropriate, but are safe and challenging.
One of the most important elements to a young child’s day is their quiet time |
